Wavedream Reference

The pinnacle of discrete R2R conversion and future-proof digital mastery.

The Wavedream Reference stands as the definitive culmination of Rockna’s decade-long pursuit of digital-to-analogue perfection. By replacing fixed-function DAC chips with a proprietary, fully programmable FPGA-based architecture, it transcends the limitations of off-the-shelf conversion, allowing the hardware itself to evolve through precision firmware updates. At the core of this reference instrument is an advanced AMD ZYNQ processing platform that manages both system control and a natively integrated, high-performance network renderer. This seamless internal integration ensures the digital signal path remains free from unnecessary obstacles, preserving the raw integrity of your high-resolution files from the moment they enter the system. The analogue output stage is a masterclass in class-A design, utilising a discrete sign-magnitude R2R ladder topology that is meticulously isolated from digital interference. Whether streaming via its Roon-ready network interface or through its versatile array of digital inputs, the Wavedream Reference delivers an intensely visceral, holographic performance, marked by breathtaking speed, rhythmic virility, and an authentic tonal density that bridges the gap between digital convenience and analogue soul.

Key Features

01

ASRC-free digital PLL

A proprietary, custom-developed clock solution that eliminates asynchronous sample rate conversion, resulting in a natural, analogue-like sense of rhythm and timing.

02

Native network renderer

Features a high-performance streamer integrated directly into the digital front-end, eliminating separate streaming boards to maintain signal purity.

03

Femtovox clock system

An ultra-low jitter clocking architecture where the conversion clock is synthesised directly at the DAC input for 1 ppb precision.

04

Custom Parks-McClellan filters

Utilises advanced convolution algorithms with 5,000 taps to offer selectable linear, minimum, and hybrid phase responses for perfect transient reproduction.

05

Discrete class-A output

A fully symmetrical, all-discrete output stage employing JFET and bipolar transistors, resulting in an output impedance of under 1 ohm.

Engineering Philosophy

Chapter 01

Engineering Philosophy

Rockna’s approach treats digital audio as a high-speed analogue phenomenon, applying rigorous radio-frequency techniques to eliminate jitter, crosstalk, and signal reflections. By running the system on a custom-tailored Linux kernel and offloading all audio processing to dedicated FPGA hardware blocks, the Wavedream Reference achieves a level of stability and precision that traditional software-driven DACs simply cannot match.
Sonic Signature

Chapter 02

Sonic Signature

The Wavedream Reference is characterised by its feisty, robust dynamics and extraordinary control over the frequency extremes. It excels at macro-dynamics, delivering deep, punchy bass and crystalline high-frequency extension without ever sounding sterile. The result is a soundstage that is both vast and meticulously layered, rendering instruments with a tangible, lifelike texture that invites long-term, non-fatiguing immersion.
Build & Materials

Chapter 03

Build & Materials

Housed in a precision-machined aluminium chassis with a 20mm front plate, the unit is as much a visual statement as it is an acoustic one. Internally, three shielded toroidal transformers and 20 discrete linear regulators ensure that the digital and analogue sections remain electrically isolated, providing a silent, black background that allows the finest micro-details of a performance to emerge with startling clarity.
