D-1 ver.2

Pure digital conversion capturing the authentic flow of live musical performance.

The D-1 ver.2 is designed for the listener who finds conventional digital audio clinical or fatiguing, acting as a portal to the raw emotional weight of a recording. Positioned as the entry point to the Soulnote Series 1 digital range, it distils the sophisticated engineering of the flagship 3 Series into a compact, uncompromising chassis. It is the ideal companion for those who demand that their digital collection mirrors the breathing, vibrant qualities of a master tape. At the heart of the D-1 ver.2 lies a fully dual-monaural design, where two ESS ES9038PRO DAC chips operate in complete independence. Eschewing the industry-standard reliance on digital oversampling and aggressive brick-wall filters, Soulnote employs a proprietary non-oversampling mode that protects the integrity of the original waveform on the time axis. This minimalist approach ensures that timing accuracy and spatial coherence remain untainted by digital processing artefacts. The analogue output stage is equally ambitious, featuring the refined New Type-R circuit adapted from the flagship E-3 phono equalizer. By utilising a resistor-based IV conversion stage and a non-negative feedback regulator, the unit achieves an open, fast, and vivid sound signature. It presents instruments with exceptional separation and natural tonal colour, stripping away the artificial gloss often applied to digital signals in favour of an honest, organic, and deeply immersive musical presentation.

Key Features

01

Dual ES9038PRO Architecture

Independent per-channel configuration ensures complete electrical isolation and superior channel separation for a pristine soundstage.

02

New Type-R Analogue Stage

A refined, fully balanced, non-NFB output topology derived from the E-3 flagship, prioritising natural dynamics and tonal richness.

03

True NOS Playback

A selectable non-oversampling mode that avoids digital filtering to maintain the temporal structure of the original recording.

04

Resistor-Based IV Conversion

Passive current-to-voltage conversion avoids the active feedback loops found in operational amplifiers, enhancing musical coherence.

Engineering Philosophy

Chapter 01

Engineering Philosophy

Soulnote rejects the supremacy of static performance measurements, focusing instead on the concept of dynamic performance. By removing global negative feedback and digital oversampling, the D-1 ver.2 maintains the integrity of the music on the time axis, which the design team identifies as the most vital element for realistic playback. The entire unit is voiced through exhaustive listening sessions to ensure that every circuit choice contributes to an authentic, non-analytical presentation.
Build and Construction

Chapter 02

Build and Construction

The D-1 ver.2 is built with a focus on resonance management, featuring an unfixed chassis design that allows internal vibrations to be dissipated naturally rather than damped. It is powered by a high-capacity non-impregnated toroidal transformer and a discrete non-NFB power supply regulator, providing the stability and transient authority required to drive complex musical passages with ease.
Listening Notes

Chapter 03

Listening Notes

The D-1 ver.2 provides a sound that is illuminating, transparent, and alive. It balances a smooth, airy treble with a clear, engaging midrange, ensuring that vocals and acoustic instruments are rendered with palpable presence. It avoids the harshness and artificial brightness of common DACs, offering instead a serene, soulful quality that rewards long-term listening sessions.
