D-2 ver.2

Vivid digital performance defined by non-feedback architecture and temporal precision.

The D-2 ver.2 serves as a pivotal bridge between Soulnote’s core range and its reference-grade components. By integrating the optimized New Type-R analogue output stage—a design derived from the flagship E-3 phono equalizer—this converter achieves a standard of dynamic energy and spatial openness previously unseen at this level. Every element is engineered to preserve the original waveform on the time axis, ensuring the music retains its natural, tactile quality. At its core, the D-2 ver.2 utilises four ES9038PRO DAC chips in a fully balanced, dual-monaural configuration. This robust design is supported by a massive 400 VA bifilar-wound toroidal transformer, providing the instantaneous current capacity of a high-power amplifier. By bypassing traditional digital filtering in favour of a selectable non-oversampling mode, the unit eliminates the artificial pre- and post-echoes that often compromise digital timing, resulting in a soundstage that feels remarkably realistic. Sonically, the D-2 ver.2 is characterised by its speed, agility, and refusal to mask the true character of a recording. It avoids the clinical sterility of many modern DACs, opting instead for a vibrant and energetic presentation that brings performers into the room. Whether used in standard stereo or expanded to a true mono configuration, it provides the transparency and emotional weight necessary to satisfy the most demanding digital audiophiles.

Key Features

01

New Type-R Analogue Circuit

A fully balanced, non-NFB output stage derived from the flagship E-3, ensuring exceptional clarity and transient response.

02

Non-Oversampling (NOS) Mode

Bypasses digital filtering algorithms to eliminate timing ambiguity, preserving the natural harmonic structure of the music.

03

Dual-Monaural Construction

Features four ES9038PRO chips arranged in a fully isolated dual-mono layout, which can be configured for infinite channel separation in mono mode.

04

Advanced Clock Connectivity

Equipped with a high-performance SMA 10 MHz reference clock input for direct synchronisation with the Soulnote X-3 master clock.

Engineering Philosophy

Chapter 01

Engineering Philosophy

Soulnote rejects the dominance of static performance measurements, prioritising instead the integrity of the original waveform on the time axis. By avoiding global negative feedback and aggressive oversampling filters, the D-2 ver.2 prevents the temporal blurring that often makes digital audio feel flat or synthetic. The internal design is dictated entirely by rigorous listening tests rather than simulations, ensuring that every component choice serves the goal of emotional realism.
Build and Construction

Chapter 02

Build and Construction

The build quality reflects a commitment to resonance management, featuring an unfixed, floating top cover and a base plate with spike footers positioned directly under the power transformers to dissipate vibration. The digital and analogue boards are isolated within a chassis designed for minimal electromagnetic interference, using 70-micron thick copper foil to eliminate the need for signal-degrading ferrite filters.
Listening Notes

Chapter 03

Listening Notes

The presentation is vivid, tactile, and highly resolved. It does not smooth over the rough edges of a complex mix, nor does it artificially warm the sound, instead offering an undiluted look into the recording session. Listeners will notice an immediate improvement in small-scale dynamics and ambient cues, with instruments appearing with lifelike weight and separation within the soundstage.
